Are There Any Online Spanish Teaching Certification Programs?

Although online education is becoming common in many fields, Spanish teaching certification programs are very difficult to find. If you want to teach Spanish, you'll probably have to enroll in an on-campus program. You may be able to earn an online teaching certificate in another area, though. Additionally, there are very limited opportunities to earn master's degrees in Spanish through the Internet.

What Are the Programs Like?

If you choose to earn your Spanish teaching certification through an on-campus program, you'll take courses both in Spanish and in teaching. The Spanish courses cover literature, language, culture and history. The education courses cover childhood development, psychology, education issues, curriculum and technology. You'll also have to complete a student teaching internship.

How Do I Get Teaching Certification?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), you'll need to earn at least a bachelor's degree and then get your teaching license or certification (www.bls.gov). Each state has its own guidelines, and many offer various paths to licensure. To teach Spanish, you may be able to earn a bachelor's degree in Spanish and then fulfill the teaching education requirements via online master's degree programs. In most teaching programs, you'll have to complete an in-person student teaching experience, during which you'll observe and teach in a classroom under the supervision of a licensed teacher.

All states accept national certification, reported the BLS. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards offers an optional certification, including a certificate for Spanish teachers (www.nbpts.org). National certification can mean higher pay and better benefits, according to the BLS.

What Online Resources Are Available?

You might be able to find teaching certification programs online, but these programs generally aren't offered for prospective Spanish teachers. If you choose this option, you'll have to spend some in-person time observing and teaching in a real classroom. You can also earn a master's degree in teaching through an online program, which may qualify you for licensure in your state. Individual online Spanish courses are offered through some schools and undergraduate programs.

Most states supply online information regarding their requirements for becoming licensed or certified as a Spanish teacher. There are also teacher organizations that provide information online for teachers at all levels. Additionally, after you're certified, you may be able to earn continuing education credits entirely online.
