What's Required Before I Get Started?

You'll need a bachelor's degree, just not necessarily in communications sciences. It may be helpful to have a bachelor's in communications sciences and disorders so that you'll have met any course prerequisites prior to beginning, although you may have the option of completing them online through the college or university you've chosen to complete your speech pathology degree. In addition to a bachelor's degree, some colleges and universities want you to have a background in sign language. Coursework in mathematics and the physical and biological sciences may also be required.

Technical requirements also need to be met for online programs. Typical software and hardware needed for online speech pathology programs include Adobe Flash Player, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, USB headset and microphone, sound card, speakers and high-speed Internet connection.

How Can I Access the Online School?

Your courses can be access through a course management system, such as Blackboard or Moodle. This environment provides 2-way communication between you and your instructor and your fellow classmates. You may access lectures, assignments, quizzes and tests through the course management system. For this, you are assigned a student ID and e-mail address that you'll use to log in. You might also be able to use your student ID and e-mail to access the school's online library database. Technical assistance is typically provided online by the school.
