Online Stenography Schools

You can play an important role in the court system by becoming a stenographer. As a stenographer, you'll take word-for-word reports on what's been said in trials, meetings and depositions. Find about about online stenography schools, what supplies you'll need, what you'll have to do to graduate and how to choose a school. What You Need to Know

In an online stenography program, you'll learn much of the same things you would in an on-campus program. Some programs focus on related disciplines, such as real-time writing and reporting. You may also complete a freelance externship, a court externship or an internship with actual working court reporters. At the end of most online stenography programs, you'll usually either earn a certificate or a diploma. Degree programs might also be available.

How Do I Decide on a School?

Look for programs that focus on developing skills necessary for the workplace and that utilize the most up-to-date equipment. Also, look for those that give you access to online labs and practice dictations. Additionally, if you live in a state that requires licensure, look for programs that prepare you to take certification exams.

What Schools Offer Programs?

Many schools across the country offer stenography training in an online format. These programs often include courses in legal terminology, keyboarding, and proofreading. Check out the following schools with online programs:

  • College of Court Reporting
  • State University of New York
  • Key College

What are Common Graduation Requirements?

In order to graduate from the program, you may need to pass several typing speed and accuracy tests. You'll likely complete speed-building courses before actually taking the tests. You might also be expected to practice on the stenography machine outside of class time too, in order to build your typing accuracy and speed.

What Will I Need to Take Part in the Program?

You'll need to purchase a stenotype machine. Some programs may call for a specific type of machine, such as the commonly used Stenograph 400 SRT. If you enroll in a program that also teaches real-time writing, you'll need to purchase a realtime writer, as well as appropriate software, such as Case CATalyst.

What Else Might I Need?

In addition to needing a stenography machine, a real-time writer and its related software, you'll also need a computer with a Windows-based operating system and high-speed Internet access. You should also have an e-mail account, a CD-ROM drive, speakers, sound card and a Java-enabled browser. You might also need word processing software that's compatible with Microsoft Windows.
