Online Tools for Writers: Jer's Novel Writer Reviewed

Each week, the Education Techie reviews tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is reviewing writing tools. Today's review: Jer's Novel Writer. Schools offering Creative Writing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

A downloadable word processor designed for writing novels, Jer's Novel Writer has some features that make it well-suited to that task. When you start a new project in the program, you can establish settings for document structure, appearance and printing. These options allow you to control fonts, margins and chapter organization.

In addition to the word processing pane, Jer's Novel Writer has a drawer feature that displays information and allows you to access different sections of your work. The drawer features outline, database and notes tabs. The outline shows the structure of what you've written so far, while the database keeps track of the characters and places you write about. The notes section is a simple platform for recording random ideas you want to associate with the work.

Jer's Novel Writer is free for individuals to install on their computers, but businesses and organizations are asked to purchase individual licenses for each of the computers on which the software is installed. There is no formal trial period, though the software's developer states that he would prefer for individuals to eventually pay for the product if they're going to use it regularly. The stated cost a license is $30, but the developer will allow you to 'haggle' for a lower price.

What Makes It Cool

Unlike most of the products I looked at for this series of reviews, Jer's Novel Writer is developed and sold by one person. The download website is written in a laid-back, amusing tone, and there are multiple ways to contact the developer if you have problems with your download or license key.

I liked the interface and appearance of Jer's Novel Writer. Users have a good amount of control over documents, and there are a lot of options for inserting notes on characters, plot and other aspects of novel-writing.

What Are Its Drawbacks?

Like other writing tools I reviewed, Jer's Novel Writer is designed for one operating system. In this case, the program is designed for Mac-based computers. This exclusivity the program's main drawback.

One additional drawback is that there is no help section included with the program. There is an orientation document that describes all of the program's features in exhaustive detail. It could be helpful if this document included images, but I understood how to use the program without them.
