If you're an administrative assistant looking to further your skills or want to enter a new career field, online certificate or associate's degree programs are available. Once you complete an online executive assistant program, you will be armed with the written and verbal skills needed to excel in the industry.

What Online Executive Assistant Programs Are Available to Me?

Some programs are available fully online, while others may require you to complete internships or attend courses on campus. An online associate's degree program consists of about 60 credit hours and may take two years to finish.

If you choose an online certificate program, you can expect to complete 5-7 courses in less than one year. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that you may need to hold an associate's or bachelor's degree, whether in executive assisting or a related field, in order to obtain an executive assistant position (www.bls.gov).

What Online Courses Will I Take?

The bulk of online courses focus on Microsoft Office programs, but you will take classes to learn other computer applications, such as Quick Books. Some courses may cover document editing, transcription and keyboarding. You also may take business-based courses, including business composition and financial accounting.

What Skills Will I Learn?

As an executive assistant, your role will be to help high-level executives by reviewing reports and performing research tasks. You may also act as a supervisor to administrative assistants, according to Payscale.com. Other courses may concentrate on the following topics:
