Online Typing Classes

Whether you're looking to increase your typing speed or prepare for an office technology degree program, many online typing classes are available. Find out about course topics and where to find classes. Schools offering Information Processing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Do Online Typing Classes Cover?

Online typing classes teach you to type at speeds of up to 30 words per minute (wpm) without looking at your hands, a technique known as touch typing. You will learn about keyboard layout, including where the most commonly used punctuation is located. You'll also discuss proper technique so that you can type using all of your fingers.

You may find that some schools offer beginner and intermediate-level classes. Beginner classes may also teach you how to format computer documents, such as letters. Intermediate classes focus on building speed and accuracy. Regardless of skill level, all classes emphasize correct practice. Typing is considered a closed set of skills and tends to be habitual. You begin slowly and build speed while minimizing mistakes.

Typing classes also teach proper typing ergonomics. This is especially important if you spend several hours a day typing. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, poor ergonomics can lead to tendonitis and bursitis which are types of repetitive motion disorders.

Class topics may include the following:

  • Home row keys
  • Shift keys
  • Top and bottom row keys
  • Letter consolidation
  • Number keys
  • Math keys

Typing courses offered include:

Introduction to Keyboarding

Typing without looking at the keyboard is known as touch typing. This course will take you through all of the steps necessary to learn touch typing. You will learn correct hand placement on the keyboard, how to increase speed and accuracy, and how to maintain proper posture and form. In this course, you will focus primarily on the alphabet keys.

Intermediate Keyboarding

In this class, you will be introduced to the number and symbol keys as well as the 'shift' key, which is often used to access them. Additionally, you will continue to work on increasing your speed and accuracy by practicing with more difficult sentences. You will also be expected to develop your skills by continuous repetition and master the knowledge and skills you've already gained in the introductory course.

Advanced Keyboarding

Students taking this course will already be familiar with the keyboard and appropriate finger placement. This course will require you to further increase your level and time spent in practice as that is vital to improving both accuracy and speed. For those who are advanced enough, alternate keyboard layouts and foreign language keyboards will be introduced.

Keyboarding Shortcuts

This course will be centered on learning numerous keyboard shortcuts. For those who spend most of their day on the computer, keyboard shortcuts save time and increase typing speed. Many shortcuts are universal - you will learn those, but also learn how to create custom shortcuts for specific functions you find yourself using repeatedly.

Word Processing and Document Formatting

Microsoft Word will be the main focus of this course. You will learn how to successfully create and edit a document, including creating charts and graphs, inserting images, and formatting. This class will also teach you what word processing skills are required in today's workplace.

Will I Have to Come to Campus?

Most classes can be completed entirely online. However, in some classes, you may have to complete timed assignments on campus, so instructors can evaluate your technique and typing speed. An orientation at the beginning of the semester may also be required.

What Technology Will I Need?

You will need a PC or Mac with an up-to-date operating system, Internet access, email, an Internet browser and a PDF plug-in. Some classes may require you to have Keyboarding Pro or similar software and a word processing program.

Where Can I Find These Classes?

Most classes are available through community and technical colleges or vocational centers. Colleges and universities with professional education programs may also offer keyboarding or typing classes. These are usually available as non-credit classes and last about one semester.
