Is There a Degree in Web Programming?

Web programming, or web developing, is a specialization or concentration in an associate's degree program in information systems management. You can also find numerous programs that lead to a certificate in web programming. All of these programs are available to you online.

What Schools Offer Online Classes in Web Programming?

Associate Degrees

Associate degrees provide students with thorough introductory knowledge of web programming and development. Some associate degree coursework can later be applied to a bachelor's degree.

  • BYU Idaho offers an online AAS in Web Design and Development
  • Champlain College offers an online Associate Degree in Web Design and Development
  • Mesa Community College offers an online AAS in Web Developer

Certificates

Certificates in web programming may be aimed at beginners, or professionals who want to advance their career skills.

What Will I Learn?

Any program in web development will provide you with the information necessary to enable you to format texts, build forms and design tables using HTML. In addition, you'll learn the fundamentals of JavaScript. You'll be instructed in PHP and MySQL. In general, you'll develop the skills you'll need in order to fashion interactive, database-founded websites.

What Courses Will I Take?

If you choose to pursue an associate's degree, you'll have to complete a number of general education courses in such areas as English composition, mathematics, the humanities, communication, social science and natural science. A certificate program carries no general education requirements.

In both types of programs, you'll take courses dealing directly with web programming. These courses cover the essentials of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), including text formatting, color, graphics and link creation. A course in JavaScript programming will teach you how to use that language to enhance interactivity between text and graphics. Finally, you'll take a course covering PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor), a language for writing server-side web applications, and MySQL, a popular open source database management system. In an associate's degree program, you'll also take courses in PERL, CGI, Visual BASIC and web design.

What Other Resources Are Available?

If you're looking for supplemental learning materials, the International Webmasters Association offers a number of stand-alone online courses in web programming (www.iwanet.org). Before you start a formal training program, you could take the IWA's introductory course on programming. The course exposes you to the basic terms used in web programming, and it also goes into flow chart creation and languages such as JavaScript. Courses are also available that discuss advance programming concepts of various languages. These courses are available for a fee, but members of IWA get a discounted rate.

Certificates and associate degrees in web programming teach students the fundamentals required to create functional websites and online applications. Some programs give students the option to focus on either front-end design or back-end coding.
