Online Word Processors: Writer From BigHugeLabs Reviewed

Each week, the Education Techie reviews tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is reviewing word processing tools. Today's review: Writer from BigHugeLabs.

What Is It?

Writer is a free, online program that provides a simple word processor. You can sign up for an account in order to restore documents if you lose them, though you can retrieve documents without an account if you allow your browser to save cookies. If you want to be able to access your documents on multiple computers, you will need to sign up for an account. Writer automatically saves your work periodically and whenever you navigate away from the word processor.

The program offers basic, limited controls. The screen has a word processing pane with a small toolbar underneath. Your saved documents are listed onscreen under the word processing pane. With the toolbar, you can start a new document, save the current document, perform a word count, print the document or download it as a .txt file or PDF. There's also a feature that lets you email your documents or export them to blogging services like Blogger, Movable Type, WordPress, TypePad and LiveJournal. Users can control line spacing in preset single, 1.5 or double spacing settings. Font controls are limited to monospace, serif and sans-serif characters.

What Are Its Pros and Cons?

I like that this site is a small-scale, independent operation that is totally free. However, the site lacks a certain professional polish. One of the least appealing aspects of this program is its appearance; the screen background is black, and all the text is small and green. Users can control the site's text color, but otherwise the program is not configurable. Even though it doesn't have a fancy, aesthetically pleasing design, the interface is straightforward enough to be used by novice computer and Internet users.

However, if you want formatting and aesthetic control, or more advanced word processing abilities, you will have to look elsewhere. In order to write and format a research paper with footnotes and inserted tables or block quotes, you'd have to use another program. The program does have a few unique perks, though, including a thesaurus and writing topic ideas for those with writer's block.
