Which Schools Offer Operating Room Technician Programs?

Operating room technicians are more frequently called surgical technologists. Programs in surgical technology are offered through junior and community colleges, hospitals, vocational schools, universities and the military. These programs generally last anywhere from 9-24 months and result in diplomas, certificates or associate's degrees. Diploma and certificate programs provide concentrated study in surgical technology, while associate's degree programs require additional general education coursework.

What Are the Admissions Prerequisites?

In general, a high school diploma or GED is required for admission to surgical technology programs. To prepare for a surgical technology program, you may consider taking high school courses in chemistry, math, biology and health. Some programs also require that you complete college-level prerequisite courses, such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology and medical terminology. In addition, you may need to undergo a criminal background check and be up-to-date on your immunizations prior to admission.

Which Courses Will I Take?

The curriculum for surgical technology programs will teach you how to care for patients in each stage of an operation, from preoperative preparations to postoperative care. You'll gain clinical experience so that you can practice the skills you'll need to employ in the operating room. You may practice caring for patients and keeping them safe, sterilizing instruments and handling equipment. The didactic portion of your program may include courses in:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Surgical procedures
  • Surgical theory
  • Perioperative techniques
  • Pharmacology

Will I Need to Earn Certification?

Although certification is voluntary, many employers prefer to hire certified technicians. You can earn certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) after meeting education or experience requirements. After passing your certification exam, you'll need to participate in continuing education and periodically renew your certification.
