What You Need to Know

Ohio-based students desiring to become paramedics may choose to earn a certificate or an associate's degree in order to qualify for the national examination required for certification. All paramedic programs in Ohio are offered by public schools, some two-year and some four-year. A certificate as a paramedic may be earned in about 18 months; associate's degrees in paramedicine usually take two years to complete. Most paramedic training programs in the region - with one exception - are available only to individuals already certified as EMTs. A physical exam, background check, driver's license, and qualifying scores on a placement exam may be required of applicants.

Paramedic Certificate Programs in Ohio

Clark State Community College

Clark State Community College's paramedic certification program provides advanced emergency training for medical and behavioral emergencies. You'll learn crisis intervention and how to deal with burns and urgent OB/GYN situations. Classes include paramedic theory, anatomy and medical terminology.

Youngstown State University

Youngstown State University's paramedic certification program provides emergency medical care practice and training. This program meets the standards set by the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Medical Service Professions and the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Medical Service. While working towards your degree, you'll be provided with knowledge related to the assessment and practice of emergency medical care and life support.

Associate's Degree Paramedic Programs in Ohio

Belmont College

Belmont College's associate's-level paramedic program teaches you emergency medical skills to help with traumatic injuries, emergency medical treatment plans and communication with health care staff. Courses in this program include anatomy, physiology, psychology, cardiac emergencies and other medical emergencies. Upon completion of your degree, you'll be eligible to test for several certifications, including Ohio paramedic, adult and pediatric internal trauma life support (ITLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

This associate's degree program allows you to either specialize in management, which could prepare you for administrative tasks in the emergency medical field, or in science, which could prepare you for research or educational roles. When you graduate, you'll be prepared to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam. Courses in this program include anatomy and physiology, paramedic clinical practice and pharmacology.
