What Will I Study in Management Science Ph.D. Program?

When you study management science at the Ph.D. level, you typically focus your studies and research in an area of professional or personal interest. Common concentration areas include information systems and technologies, marketing and operations management.

The concentration you select will largely determine the faculty you work with, your research and any lower-level courses you may teach. For example, if you study operations management from an information systems and technologies perspective, you will primarily work on issues related to computer systems, office networks and data mining.

Ph.D. programs in management science are not generally offered online; however, in many cases, a majority of your time can be spent outside of a university setting, as you will spend significant time researching and writing.

What Are Common Admissions Requirements?

You must complete at least a bachelor's degree prior to applying to a Ph.D. in Management Science program. Not all graduate programs in this field require a master's degree; however, a demonstrated interest in the field may be necessary.

You may prove this interest through an undergraduate degree in a myriad of related fields, including economics, mathematics, engineering and statistics. Additionally, you may be asked for a resume or professional references in order to highlight professional experience. You may also need to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
