How Do I Become a Pharmacy Technician?

You can prepare for a career as a pharmacy technician by earning a certificate or associate's degree. However, there aren't any standardized education requirements for this career field. This means that you can also receive training on the job, in a vocational school or through the armed services. Regardless of where you receive your pharmacy technology education, you need a high school diploma or GED certificate before you start taking formal courses.

Some states require pharmacy technicians to be certified. If you plan on working in a state that doesn't require certification, voluntarily pursuing it can serve the purpose of advancing your career. You can become certified through the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Some online pharmacy technology programs (especially those hosted by schools located in states that require it) prepare you to pass a certification exam as part of the curriculum.

What Do I Learn?

Online pharmacy technology programs teach you how to dispense medication under the supervision of a pharmacist and according to a doctor's specifications. Instruction also covers the use of computer programs that print medication labels, bill insurance companies and track patient history.

Although you can earn your degree online, you may have to complete a capstone requirement in person. This usually involves preparing for a certification exam and locating full-time employment as a pharmacy technician. Online requirements cover:

  • Patient privacy law
  • Pharmacy terminology
  • Compounding medications
  • Information technology
  • Human anatomy
  • Common medical conditions
