De Anza College

In this program, you learn how to process specimens, set up lab tests, and perform venipunctures. You take courses in medical terminology, procedures used in a clinical lab, and medical law. You also complete externships in clinical facilities and gain skills in medical reception and assisting. This program prepares you to sit for a national phlebotomy certification test.

Mt. Diablo Adult Education

This program prepares you to pass the National Center for Competency Testing examination for phlebotomy technicians. Courses cover anatomy of circulatory systems, infection control, phlebotomy safety and precautions, phlebotomy equipment, biohazards, and risk factors. You must also complete a 120-hour clinical externship to pass the program.

In this program, you first receive classroom instruction and must successfully complete this portion in order to proceed to clinical instruction. You then undertake an 80-hour externship in acute care settings; you might also undertake experiences in psychiatric, long-term rehabilitation, or outpatient care units. Coursework covers basic hematology, site selection, and infection control. As a graduate, you'll be eligible to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I.
