What Is Required for Plastic Surgery Nurse Certification?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses (ASPSN), you can apply for your certification in plastic surgery nursing after gaining at least two years of experience in the field. At least 50% of that time must be practical experience. Additionally, you must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN).

To obtain your RN licensure, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) in the state where you intend to work. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), requirements for this examination vary from state to state. What Education and Training Programs Must I Complete?

You may complete either an associate's or bachelor's degree program in nursing in order to earn an RN license. Since there are no special degree tracks for plastic surgery nursing, you may choose to complete your clinical experience at a plastic surgery facility, if the option is available. The ASPSN offers a 5-hour training course that can help prepare you for its plastic surgery nurse certification designation. In this course, you might study topics such as plastic or reconstructive surgery of the head, neck, breast and abdomen, which are all content areas on the exam.

What Classes Can I Take?

Whether you choose to enroll in an associate's or a bachelor's degree nursing program, your studies are founded on science and biology. You usually spend much of your time in hands-on learning environments, giving you the chance to practice in real and simulated situations. You could also work in various clinical settings, including medical-surgical settings.

The courses you take in a nursing program prepare you for the NCLEX-RN and give you a strong understanding of practical nursing procedures. Some of the topics you can study include:

  • Nursing skill sets
  • Public health
  • Microbiology
  • Physical changes throughout the lifespan
  • Pharmacology
  • Statistics

Can I Complete a Degree Program Online?

Due to the extensive hands-on requirements of nursing programs, you can't complete all of your nursing training online, but there are some opportunities for distance learning. If you've earned your Licensed Practical Nurse designation, you may be able to complete further coursework online to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and sit for the NCLEX-RN. If you've already earned an associate's degree, you can find online bachelor's degree completion programs in nursing. These are typically referred to as RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. Additionally, the ASPSN offers online continuing education opportunities for plastic surgery nurses.
