Pre-Pharmacy College Classes and Degree Programs

Educational and professional requirements vary, but completing a pre-pharmacy program can prepare you to eventually enroll in a doctoral degree program in pharmacy. Keep reading to learn more about this program and what kind of courses it offers. Schools offering Health Science degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

Pre-pharmacy is not a stand-alone degree offered by schools, but often consists of a concentration of courses that fulfill prerequisites needed to enroll in a doctor of pharmacy degree program. Prerequisite courses are similar to most pre-medical undergraduate requirements, including biology, physiology, organic chemistry and anatomy.

Programs Pre-pharmacy is not offered as a degree program, but pre-pharmacy courses may be offered by some community colleges and 4-year colleges as a concentration within a degree program; some pharmacy programs are offered as a 6-year program that includes pre-pharmacy prerequisites

What Is Pre-Pharmacy?

A pre-pharmacy program is not a bachelor's degree program. Students who are interested in earning an undergraduate degree in pharmacy might complete a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS). However, completing such a degree is not usually necessary to gain admittance into a doctoral program in pharmacy. Instead, you could enroll in a pre-pharmacy program, which consists of a professional curriculum and is found in many college pharmacy departments. Separate entrance exams are often needed to enter into these programs, even if you are changing your major within the same school. Pre-pharmacy programs can typically prepare you for pharmacy school.

What Degree Can I Earn?

Pre-pharmacy is a concentration found within an undergraduate degree program. In essence, pre-pharmacy is not necessarily a degree-awarding program, but instead is a 2-year program of courses that pharmacy schools require for admission. Pre-pharmacy concentrations are found at community colleges and at undergraduate schools; however, many community colleges guide students toward a 4-year institution.

Some pharmacy schools will require you to have a bachelor's degree, while others will not. Some may also allow you to apply your credits from a pre-pharmacy program towards the completion of a bachelor's degree while you simultaneously complete a doctoral degree.

It should be noted that not all pharmacy schools require pre-pharmacy credits to apply and enroll in the graduate program. According to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), some pharmacy schools are structured as 6-year programs. This length of time allows the pharmacy schools to not require students to have pre-pharmacy credits (www.aacp.org).

What Types of Classes Are Needed?

Although many programs might cover the basics for pre-pharmacy in their general education requirements, a pharmacy school requires you to complete college classes explicitly found through a 'pre-pharmacy program' in order to enter pharmacy school. For example, a general science program may allow for a pre-pharmacy concentration.

Typically, you need to take biology and chemistry courses, each with a lab, at introductory and intermediate levels. Other science courses that may be included in a pre-pharmacy program include:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Organic chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Physics
  • Calculus and statistics

General education requirements like literature, philosophy (especially ethics) and English courses are also necessary in the programs.
