Tips for Taking Graduate School Exams

Graduate school exams should not be taken lightly. Your score can make or break your chances of getting in to your school of choice. To make sure you're ready, check out this list of proven tips for students taking graduate school exams.

Take the Right Exam

In general, the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is required for admission to business schools, while the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is required for admission to most graduate schools. However, more and more business schools also are accepting the GRE, while an increasing number of general graduate schools are considering students' GMAT scores.

There isn't much difference between the two exams. Both test critical thinking, verbal and quantitative reasoning, and writing. The GMAT is thought to be a little more difficult for U.S. students, while the GRE might be harder for international students. Before deciding which test is best suited for you, find out which is accepted by your program of choice.

Study, Study, Study

Graduate school exams aren't like regular tests. You can't cram the night before and expect a good score. You should begin studying for graduate school exams months in advance. Review the material you're already familiar with, and spend extra time on material that is foreign to you.

Become Familiar with the Test

Before taking a graduate school exam, it's imperative that you familiarize yourself with the test format. Some test centers offer practice tests, which you also can find in test prep books and online.

Manage Your Time

Time goes by fast when you're taking a graduate school exam. If you don't manage your time carefully, you could end up leaving much of the test unfinished. Unfortunately, not every test center keeps a clock on the wall. Bring a watch or a silent timer with you to keep track of time, but check with your testing center first to make this is allowed.

Answer Easy Questions First

When it comes to graduate school exams, no test question is any more important than another. If you find yourself spending too much time on any one question, skip it. You can always go back to that question later if you have time.

Get a Good Night's Sleep and Relax

Although it might be difficult, try to get a good night's sleep before you take a graduate school exam. Your memory will function better. You also should do your best to relax before the exam and even while taking it. Stressing out and panicking won't help your scores.
