What Is Covered in Psychology Classes?

Psychology is a diverse field with many sub-specialties, so you could take a wide variety of psychology classes. In general, you learn how to understand people by observing, recording and interpreting their actions. The following courses are examples of what you may study.

Introductory to Psychology

An introduction to psychology is the first step in psychology classes. It covers a broad area of study, touching briefly on subjects but not delving too deep. Topics include, but are not limited to, behavioral disorders, neuroscience, research methods, statistics, personality, human development, psychopathology and social constructs.

Child Psychology

Child psychology classes focus on the development of children as it relates to biological, emotional and social influences. This type of coursework guides the student through child-rearing, family values and peer experience. Child psychology classes also touch on childhood mental illness.

Social Psychology

Social psychology classes examine individual personalities in social situations. These courses look at attitudes, culture, language, relationships and group dynamics.

Research Methods

Research methods in psychology covers the analytical aspect of the subject. Students will learn theoretical concepts, how to develop hypotheses, how to test theories and evaluate the findings. Abnormal Psychology

Abnormal psychology classes focus on behavioral disorders, whether as a result of genetics, biology or environment. This type of coursework examines how to diagnose disorders and, in some respect, also look at the treatments available. Abnormal psychology deals with topics such as anxiety, dissociative identity disorder, psychosis and depression.
