What You Need to Know

Registered nursing (RN) programs in Minnesota are available at the associate's, bachelor's and master's degree levels. The Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) program can be completed in two years at a 2-year, public community college. Applicants must take placement tests and undergo a background check; prerequisite science classes and a minimum GPA are also required. The ASN program prepares students for the professional licensing exam, employment and continued study at the bachelor's degree level.

The 4-year bachelor's degree programs available at public universities can be accelerated for students who already have an RN license; schools may offer a 2-year RN-to-BSN track. An accelerated track may also be available to applicants with a bachelor's degree in another field. Applicants to BSN programs may need to have a minimum GPA on prerequisite courses and CPR or CNA certification; an entrance exam is also required at one school. The curriculum includes lecture classes and clinical training. Graduates are prepared for career advancement; those without an RN license are prepared to sit for the RN exam.

There is also a Master of Nursing degree program for students seeking an RN license. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field and also complete prerequisite courses. Letters of recommendation are also required. This program takes less than two years. In addition to qualifying for the RN licensure exam, graduates are qualified to apply for continued doctoral study. Keep reading to see if one of these paths to RN licensure is right for you.
