What Is Radiography Technology?

Radiologic technology is the process of creating images of the inside of the human body in order to diagnose and treat illnesses. This field covers a number of services such as MRIs, X-rays and CT scans. Through the use of radiation, you're able to take images of a patient's anatomy and help with the diagnosis of injuries and illnesses. Ultrasounds often work with soft tissue and organs, but radiologic technology focuses more on the skeletal and ligaments of the body.

What Degree Programs Are Available?

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) has accredited a large number of certificate, associate and bachelor's degree programs around the country. As of 2016, the JRCERT has accredited about 750 radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance and medical dosimetry educational programs.

The certificate program prepares you for entry-level positions in the radiology field. You'll spend time learning communication, critical-thinking, assessment skills and imaging methods. In the associate degree program, you'll spend more time on patient positioning, machinery usage and patient care. You'll also gain clinical time and lab experience through a practicum and lab-centered courses. Some of the subjects you'll study include anatomy, positioning, radiation exposure, patient assessment, medical ethics, equipment maintenance and medical terminology.

The bachelor's degree program is the highest level you can complete before narrowing your focus. If you have already earned your certification this may be an excellent option for continuing your education. You'll focus your studies on quality health care, the health care system, legal matters in health care and patient care.

How Do I Become Certified?

You can become certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This organization offers a certification examination that earns you a certified radiologic technologist designation. In order to take the examination, you must meet the education requirements provided by the ARRT. The ARRT also provides annual registration that shows employers you are dedicated to maintaining a current knowledge of radiologic technology. Many states also require licensure, so be sure to check with your state's licensing board for requirements.

Can I Earn These Degrees Online?

According to the JRCERT, no online programs were accredited as of April 2016 ( Many colleges cannot offer fully online degree programs because clinical experience is required.
