Can I Earn My Degree Online?

You can earn a bachelor's degree in real estate development online. However, the majority of online real estate development programs are for graduate students earning master's degrees or a graduate certificate. Some bachelor's degree programs can be completed entirely online, while other schools allow you to complete a certain number of units online. If you participate in an online program, you must have access to a computer, an e-mail account, an Internet connection and word-processing software, such as Microsoft Word. Some courses may also require you to purchase additional textbooks, learning materials or software.

Online Availability Online programs are available
Common Courses Finance, marketing, business, property law, accounting
Licensure Information Real estate license is required and not included in a degree
Possible Careers Construction manager, mortgage broker, realtor, real estate analyst, appraiser

What Courses Will I Take as a Real Estate Development Major?

Because the real estate industry is very diverse, real estate development majors cover a broad range of topics. Your curriculum will include courses in business, finance, construction, ethics and marketing, among other topics. Some course topics you might study include:

  • Effective sales techniques
  • Urban and community development
  • Real estate investments
  • Real estate financing
  • Property law
  • Construction planning and operations
  • Real estate design
  • Management and leadership
  • Accounting

Will I Have a Real Estate License When I Graduate?

Unfortunately, the degree itself doesn't serve as a license in the field. After graduating, you'll have to take a licensing exam to earn your real estate license. You may need to take a separate course to prepare for the exam; however, some real estate development programs may include such preparation courses. If the career you are interested in requires a license, you may want to look into the requirements and your options.

What Can I Do With My Degree?

You can go into a number of different fields upon graduation, including analysis, finance, banking, lending, economic development, sales and property management. You could become a realtor, a construction manager, appraiser, real estate analyst or mortgage broker. You may even find a government career in city planning at the local, state or federal level. Your eligibility for some positions may depend on licensure, prior experience or level of education.
