What Degree Do I Need To Become a Relationship Counselor?

To become a counselor, including a relationship counselor, you will usually need at least a master's degree because, while standards vary from state to state, this degree is typically the minimum requirement to become licensed with the state that you are practicing in.

Many counselors earn their master's degree from programs such as a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Marriage and Family Counseling or an M.A. in Counseling with a sex therapy specialization. Other possible degree options at the doctorate level include the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Marital and Family Therapy or Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a marriage and family emphasis.

Master's Program Prerequisites Undergraduate major in psychology or related social science; miniumum GPA and GRE scores
Licensure Requirements Vary by state; most states require a master's degree in counseling; doctoral study available but optional
Subject Topics Professional counseling skills, research methods, material related to clinical work experience
Professional Benefits Improved counseling/listening skills; additional guided clinical experience

What Are the Entry Requirements?

Each school and degree program has different prerequisites for entry, but there are several common requirements for graduate programs, including a bachelor's degree. Most graduate schools either require or prefer for you to major in psychology or a related social science field as an undergraduate. Many schools also require students to take the GRE, a standardized test that measures language and math skills.

Entry into graduate school can be competitive and you should be well prepared when applying. Many schools have minimum GPA and GRE score requirements, and these scores may heavily influence whether you are accepted into the graduate program. You should also be aware that admission rates differ between clinical and counseling psychology graduate programs, with clinical programs typically being more competitive.

How Will My Degree Help Me?

While earning a graduate degree is necessary to become a relationship counselor, it is beneficial in other ways as well. In graduate school you will learn the skills necessary to become an effective counselor. With training, you will be able to listen to clients explain their problems and concerns, while remaining professional in all situations.

You will also gain guided experience in a graduate program, as performing counseling sessions and undertaking an internship are usually required for graduation and for licensure following graduation. If you enter a clinical psychology program, you will also develop research experience, as well as experience working with clinical populations.
