What Will I Study To Earn a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Studies?

While you may devote time to studying a wide range of the world's major religions, you will likely focus your studies on a particular religion, such as Hinduism, Islam or Judaism. You may also concentrate your studies on religion as it pertains to a particular time period, geographic region or group of people, such as early American Christianity, East Asian religions or women of the Bible.

Your coursework will consist of lecture-based classes and independent research. You will analyze primary texts, such as the Torah and the Dead Sea Scrolls. This may require you to study the various languages in which these texts are written. Additionally, you will read secondary texts that offer theories and criticism. Some programs, though not all, will require you to complete a thesis prior to graduating.
