What Levels of Study are Available for Online Teaching Degrees?

Many schools offer a Master of Arts in Teaching online, and some also offer specializations online, such as master's programs in special education, science education, mathematics education and English as a second language. There are also some undergraduate teaching programs if you are interested in getting a bachelor's degree in a specific academic field, such as early childhood education, science for grades 5-9 or interdisciplinary studies in grades K-8.

How Long Does It Take?

Completion time for online teaching degrees may vary depending on the program you choose and whether you decide to study full-time or part-time. With full-time course loads, bachelor's degree programs typically take four years to complete, and a master's program generally takes around two years to finish.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

For the master's degree program, you'll be required to have an undergraduate degree in an educational field. You must also be an active teacher or have previous teaching experience of at least a year and a letter of recommendation from your principal. The typical prerequisite for a bachelor's program is a high school diploma or a GED.

Will an Online Program Qualify Me for Licensure?

Yes, most programs prepare you for licensure and will recommend you for your preferred teaching credential (English, math, social studies, science, or multiple subject teaching) once you have earned your degree. Teacher licensing requirements vary by state, but typically include a degree from a state-approved teacher school and passage of a skills assessment exam.

How Do Online Programs Work?

The educational portion of an online program is no different than that of a campus-based program. In an online program, you'll attend classes and do most of your required work online. You'll even be able to sit in on lectures and chat with other students. All of the didactic coursework in online programs is identical to on-campus programs.

Like campus-based teaching degree programs, you may be expected to complete a student teaching practicum, and this may require an additional fee on top of your tuition. Most schools will help you schedule a practicum with a school in your area.
