What You Need to Know

Shipping management programs, which can range from on-the-job training to graduate degrees, prepare you for jobs that involve working on or with ships, which can include maintaining operations, trucking, warehousing or distribution, as well as being a member of the crew of a ship, an officer on board a ship or supervising the docks. Other shipping positions are available in rail, trucking or airfreight. Many managers in this area do not work directly with the transported good, but instead with the planning and scheduling of shipping.

What Programs Prepare Me to Work With Ships or Ports?

Your training will largely depend on your career goals. For example, to work in management on a ship or other related shore jobs, a degree program in maritime administration or marine engineering could be the place to start. Most jobs on ships or at ports require Coast Guard certification.

Maritime administration and marine engineering courses are on-campus programs, often requiring time at sea in addition to on-campus. While some programs may have online components or allow some lower-level classes to be taken online, most of the program will be on-campus or on a ship.

Anyone with access to ports or ships, including truck drivers, also has to have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) from the Transportation Security Administration. Getting the TWIC credential requires proof of citizenship or immigration status and a criminal background check.

What Programs Prepare Me for Other Shipping Management Jobs?

Not all positions in shipping management work directly with ships. These jobs, and their educational programs, often fall under logistics or supply chain management, while the field itself may be referred to as warehousing and distribution, materials movement or goods movement.

Entry-level jobs in materials movement may require that workers be at least 18 years of age and physically able to do the work; however, a high school diploma or GED may or may not be required. Workers may be able to advance through gaining experience or by receiving further on-the-job training.

Many colleges and universities offer degree programs in logistics or supply chain management, usually in their business school. Community colleges may also offer either degrees or certificates in the field. This training can be beneficial for pursuing higher-level jobs in areas such as highly automated environments or for working with products that require special knowledge like perishables, hazardous materials, or goods being imported or exported.

Degree programs in logistics and supply chain management are offered on-campus, as well as completely online or hybrid programs. Non-degree certificate programs may take from a few months to two years to complete.

Some certifications that enhance your employment opportunities can be gained part-time after you start working, either through online courses or short training classes offered by colleges or by professional groups. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and American Society of Transportation and Logistics both offer information on workshops and online training for people already in the field who want to improve their skills and advance their careers.
