What is Six Sigma?
Six Sigma defines organizational goals, measures quality characteristics, analyzes design alternatives, optimizes processes accordingly and verifies that the new version of a process is operating successfully.
Originally developed for application in Motorola, Six Sigma has evolved to incorporate additional training models, statistical methods and quality control techniques. The statistical foundation behind Six Sigma is that there are six possible deviations from the average output of any production process to its limit. Six Sigma methods are designed to reevaluate manufacturing processes on a continual basis.
What Do I Need to Enroll?
You need a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, before you enroll in a program to earn your Six Sigma Green Belt. You'll need to have earned your Green Belt within a year of applying to a Black Belt program. You'll also need to be working in a management position to complete a Black Belt program. This is because you'll be working with your supervisor to implement Six Sigma practices while earning your certificate.
What Will I Learn?
In a Green Belt program, you'll learn how Six Sigma practices can be used by lower-level employees under the direction of management. Coursework will discuss the application of statistics and continual analysis to improve product consistency, customer satisfaction and existing processes.
Six Sigma Black Belt programs teach you how to implement Six Sigma practices as a management professional or supervisor. You'll learn how to use statistical practices and analytical software to measure the output of a manufacturing process. You'll also learn how to conduct regression analysis, design an engineering experiment and identify the redundant components of a manufacturing process. In a capstone project, you'll create and execute a plan to remove parts of a manufacturing or quality control process that don't add value to the product.
What Other Certificates Can I Earn?
You can also earn Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Master Black Belt and Champion certification. Yellow Belt programs cover simple regression analysis, customer service and process improvement. Master Black Belt programs teach you how to provide Green, Yellow and Black Belt training to others. In a Champion Six Sigma program, you'll learn how to lead an entire organization in the implementation of Six Sigma practices.
How Can I Use My Certificate?
Green Belt and Yellow Belt programs equip you to implement Six Sigma practices as a low-level employee. Black Belt programs are meant for managers. Master Black Belt programs qualify you for a mentorship role where you provide training and advice to those with Green, Yellow and Black Belt certificate training as you assist those with Champion certification. If you earn your Champion Six Sigma certification, you can implement cost control practices and devise new processes for an entire company or organization.
