These programs are typically for teaching Spanish to middle school and high school students, but you can find some programs geared towards teaching elementary school students as well. Additionally, you can earn a master's degree in teaching if you've already earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish. Graduate Spanish teaching certificates are also available.

What Do the Programs Cover?

Typical bachelor's degree programs for Spanish teachers require courses in Spanish language, culture and history. You'll take courses in Spanish and Latin American literature, and depending on your program, you might have the opportunity to travel abroad. This allows you to immerse yourself in a Spanish-speaking culture and hone your conversational skills. Writing, reading and speaking Spanish are core elements of the language portion of your Spanish teaching degree program.

If you're pursuing a bachelor's degree to teach Spanish, the teaching aspect of your studies will sometimes be completed as a minor. You'll take courses through the education department which covers human development, classroom diversity and curriculum planning. A master's degree or post-baccalaureate Spanish teaching certificate is also available. Regardless of which degree you're seeking, you'll spend time teaching in a classroom. There are limited opportunities for master's degree students to take courses online. Teaching courses typically require on-campus attendance.

How Do I Become Certified or Licensed?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), public school teachers must earn a teaching license. You'll be licensed to teach Spanish to secondary school students. If you'd like to teach elementary school children, you will need to be licensed as an elementary school teacher.

While the requirements for licensing differs from state to state, you'll need to earn a bachelor's degree, complete a teacher training program and perform supervised classroom work. Depending on the state, you may be required to complete a master's degree program shortly after getting hired. Some states require new teachers to earn a provisional license until they've demonstrated satisfactory teaching skills, and most states will require you to complete continuing education credits to maintain your Spanish teaching license. Alternative routes toward licensing may be available in your state.
