What Are the Degree Requirements For a Speech-Language Therapist?

A bachelor's degree is not adequate to practice as a speech-language therapist, though a few states allow you to pursue a teaching license in speech-language therapy with only a bachelor's degree. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), this was the case in Arizona, Oregon and Nevada in 2011. Three other states allowed a provisional teaching license with a bachelor's degree, with a master's degree required within a set period. These states included Florida, Maine and New York.

Even though a bachelor's degree in speech-language therapy does not qualify you to practice as a speech-language therapist, many universities offer one as preparation for master's degree work. Master's degree programs require substantial prerequisites in science, language development, statistics and clinical procedures.

Some states allow you to work as a speech-language assistant with a bachelor's degree or even an associate degree. An assistant works under the direction of a licensed therapist, providing speech-language therapy to patients.

Because of the clinical components incorporated into the curriculum, most programs are on-campus. However, the ASHA does recognize some master's degree programs that have online classes, particularly for students who are already working in the field.

While doctorate programs are available, it is not required to work as a speech-language therapist. If you are currently licensed in the field, you may want to pursue a Ph.D. in order to teach at a college or university, or pursue research opportunities.

What Should I Study in My Undergraduate Work?

Most programs require a strong background in speech-language therapy before entering a graduate program. This can include classes in specific problems, such as stuttering or cleft palate, and introductory classes to speech-language therapy techniques. Classes in normal speech communication are usually part of the requirement, such as language development in children, phonetics and the anatomy of speech.

What is a Master's Degree Program Like?

Master's degree programs in speech-language therapy combine academic coursework with internship opportunities. You will focus your studies on diagnosing speech-language disorders, speech anatomy, speech rehabilitation, phonological disorders and research methods. If you have a bachelor's degree in a related field, you can expect to complete the program in two years. An internship allows you to practice under the supervision of a licensed speech-language therapist and begin working and treating with patients living with speech-language disorders.
