How Do Online Programs Work?

Online degree programs in speech-language pathology are offered as either fully online or hybrid programs. Online programs will require you to complete a required clinical practicum in your local area. Your classes will be delivered via the Internet, CD and video tape. You will need basic computer skills, a reliable Internet connection and requisite software.

Hybrid programs are a combination of online and on-campus learning. You will typically be required to attend summer sessions on campus and complete your clinical practicum at a facility near the school. Your coursework may be delivered as a combination of online classes, videotaped lectures and conference phone calls.

Are There any Licensing or Certification Requirements?

Most states have licensing requirements for speech-language pathologists. Typical requirements include a master's degree from an accredited program, a minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical experience, successful completion of the Praxis speech-language pathology exam and nine months of professional clinical practice. You will be required to take continuing education classes for license renewal.

Speech-language pathologists working in public schools may have different licensing requirements determined by your state's Department of Education. The Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) is a voluntary credential offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association that may meet some or all licensure requirements in your state.

What is the Career Outlook for This Field?

Speech-language pathology graduates may work as speech pathologists in clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and schools. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), career opportunities for speech-language pathologists are expected to increase by 21% from 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov). Job growth is primarily due to rising school enrollment and an increase in survivors of trauma, stroke and premature births who may require assessment and treatment. Opportunities will be greatest for those willing to relocate and speak a second language. The BLS listed an annual median salary of $73,410 for speech-language pathologists in 2015.
