Sun Studies Degree Programs

The field of sun studies, more commonly called heliophysics or solar physics, is a scientific examination of the sun and the reactions of the sun's magnetic atmosphere on Earth. Read on to find out more about this unique sliver of scientific studies, including degree program options. Schools offering Computer Programming degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is Sun Studies?

Sun studies (also referred to as solar physics, solar studies, solar sciences and heliophysics) is the observation of the sun and its atmosphere. Through measurements and computer models you'll be able to study the sun's interior and predict its actions. Through a concentration in solar physics you'll also learn about solar winds, cosmic rays and solar energetic particles.

What Programs Are Available?

Rather than looking for degrees in sun studies, you'll want to search for solar physics programs. However, even under that name there are few programs available. Graduate programs are offered through a small number of colleges. These programs tend to be heavy in basic physics courses with a focus towards solar physics.

One option you can consider is looking into programs that offer solar studies courses. For instance, astronomy majors often have solar studies within their curriculum. Of course, in these programs you'll also find studies in astrophysics, solar physics, the solar system, instrumentation and astrobiology. There are no online studies available for sun studies or solar physics.

Degrees in space sciences or space physics are often valuable for the study of solar sciences. In these programs you'll look at magnetic and electric occurrences in space and how they relate to the solar system and the sun. You'll use instruments to study and take data on the solar systems and the sun. Along with courses in solar studies, you'll also research astrophysics, thermodynamics, observational astronomy, oceanography, electromagnetic theories, orbital mechanics and space plasma physics.

What Other Options Are Available?

Some colleges offer a program called a Heliophysics Educator Ambassador (HEA) Program. These programs teach current middle school and high school science teachers about Earth and space science. The two main goals of this program are to educate you to teach other educators about NASA resources and these sciences (which also include solar physics), and to help you implement some of this information into your lesson plans.

These conferences are usually a week long with continuous educational support available afterward. This program teaches you how the sun interacts with the moon and the Earth's magnetosphere. Through lectures and hands-on activities you'll learn how to best implement these studies into your lesson plans.
