Systems Analyst Schools and Training Programs

Find out what training bachelor's and master's degree programs offer for information technology systems analysts. Explore online program and specialization options. Schools offering Business Systems Analysis degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

You'll need at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science or management information systems (MIS) to land a job in a technical setting. Some employers in business environments will require you to have an advanced degree, such as an MBA (Master of Business Administration) in Information Systems.

Courses Operating systems, programming languages, computer networks, systems administration, information resource management, data analysis, information assurance, and risk management
Degrees Bachelor's and master's degrees
Online Options Online lectures and discussion forums; must possess proper software/hardware requirements

What Will I Learn?

In the computer science programs, you'll learn about algorithms and data structures. Course topics in the information science programs include systems administration and desktop publishing. Here are some other topics that might be included:

  • Operating systems
  • Programming languages
  • Computer networks
  • Information resource management
  • Computer programming
  • Database applications

What About Other Courses?

MIS programs focus on developing technical and business skills. Topics you might study include business information technology and data analysis. An MBA in information systems has a similar aim and includes courses on business management and data communications. These topics could also be explored:

  • Information assurance
  • Risk management
  • Business data communications
  • Systems analysis
  • Knowledge management
  • Information technology

What Prerequisites Will I Need to Meet?

In many cases, you won't be able to declare a major in MIS until you've completed certain lower-division prerequisites. Such prerequisites include foundational courses in economics, management operations, English and mathematics. Many programs have set minimums for the number of total credits you'll need to have earned to declare this major; in some cases, this requirement can account for about half the credits needed to earn your degree.

Expect to be required to meet a minimum grade point average, as well. Admission into an MBA program in information systems requires you to have a bachelor's degree in any field and satisfactory scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

Are There Online Schools?

Programs in these areas are widely available online and offer the same content that on-campus programs include. Online lectures can be text-based, or they can include a combination of elements, such as video, sound and graphics. Online lectures and discussion forums can either be 'live' or asynchronous, meaning that they can be accessed at any time.

To participate in your classes, you'll need a computer with Internet access. You'll also need a functional e-mail account, a sound card and speakers, media playing software and productivity software, such as Adobe Reader and Microsoft Office.

What Should I Look for in a School?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2016, many computer systems analysts worked as contractors and may have the best prospects through 2026 by choosing a program with a business focus, like the MIS and MBA programs. Also, many systems analysts specialize in areas such as system architecture, system design and software quality assurance. Make sure you choose a program that offers a specialty track if you plan on streamlining your job duties to focus on one particular area.
