The Benefits of Going Green in Your Dorm Room

There are a multitude of benefits to going green in your dorm room. In this article, we cover some of the ways that you can contribute to a green lifestyle, even while you're away at school.

Going Green While You're Away at School

Just because you're away at college doesn't mean your green commitment has to go down the drain. There are still things you can do in your dorm room to be environmentally conscious and make a positive impact in the field of sustainability.

Ways to Be Green in Your Dorm Room

Hopefully your school has already taken some environmentally friendly steps in your dorms, like using energy efficient appliances and lighting. There are other things that you can do on your own to help the efforts. Cut down on your personal energy use whenever you can. This includes turning off lights when you don't need them, using natural light whenever possible or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It's also a good idea to cut down on your water use, so shut the faucet off while brushing your teeth and take shorter showers.

Along with trying to make a difference individually, you might want to think about coordinating efforts to get the other students living on campus involved. Try teaming up with your resident advisors to share your green tips with other students. And let your RA know if there are other things dorm administrators could do to help. For instance, if they're printing all of their notices and sliding them under your door, see if they'd consider creating an e-mail list instead to inform residents, which would help to cut down on waste.

Another way to motivate your on-campus neighbors could be by helping to organize an incentive program. Some schools have even given monetary prizes for the students who had the largest reduction in energy usage. It could be a fun and educational competition.

It's Good to Be Green

One of the biggest reasons to go green is to minimize the damage being done to the planet. If everyone pitches in to make a difference, a significant impact can be made in terms of environmental sustainability.

The good green habits you and your fellow students develop now could remain with you even beyond your college years. As a generation of environmentally friendly people, you can be a part of helping the environment for many years to come.

Another way you can reduce your waste is by taking notes online instead of on paper. Find out the pros and cons of Zoho Notebook through a review by our Education Techie.
