What Are Some Characteristics of Top Photojournalism Schools?

After developing your basic journalism skills, top photojournalism schools will help you make connections with major media outlets and professionals. They will have archives, state-of-the-art labs and darkrooms. Top schools will also offer hands-on opportunities through media internships. They may have research institutes, student publications, contests and other opportunities to hone and showcase your photojournalism skills.

What Are Three Top Photojournalism Schools?

Boston University

It tied for 42nd among U.S. News & World Report's national university rankings for 2019. You'll develop multimedia, photo editing and Web design skills in the Department of Journalism's undergraduate and graduate photojournalism concentrations. You can spend a semester interning with media outlets in Washington, D.C. or London. You could also contribute to local political reporting through the BU State House Program.

BU's New England Center for Investigative Reporting and Center for Science and Medical Journalism also sponsor training and internship programs. You'll have access to Mac, digital video and photography postproduction labs. Your work could be published in the student-run Daily Free Press or The Comment graduate magazine, awarded Best Student Magazine by the Society of Professional Journalists. University of Missouri in Columbia

The University of Missouri (UM) was the 129th ranked national university, according to U.S. News & World Report in 2019. As the country's first school of journalism, it exposes students to a combination of research and hands-on experience through participation in the local NBC affiliate, a community news daily and local and international magazines.

As an undergraduate or graduate concentrating in photojournalism, you could pursue a capstone project in Washington, D.C. or intern in New York City. You could also work with volunteer professional photographers and picture editors from major metropolitan dailies and magazines like National Geographic through the Missouri Photo Workshop. UM also sponsors the College Photographer of the Year contest.

UM is affiliated with multiple professional organizations, such as the Committee of Concerned Journalists, and Investigative Reporters and Editors. Students can contribute to their publications or participate in their workshops. The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) houses the Frank Lee Martin Journalism Library and hosts an international photojournalism competition. UM offers the following photojournalism degrees:

University of Texas at Austin

UT - Austin was tied for 49th in U.S. News & World Report's 2019 national university rankings. Photojournalism is offered by the School of Journalism as an upper-division undergraduate sequence and as a graduate track for professional photographers. Undergraduates are encouraged to pursue internship courses. You could also take a semester-long photojournalism course in the Czech Republic. The school provides two darkrooms and digital and advanced digital laboratories.

Coursework is supported by the Harry Ransom Center's collection of works by major journalists and photojournalists. Students can showcase their work at the UT Documentary Center or attend lectures by guest speakers. Other special projects include the Texas Program in Sports and Media and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. The following degrees are available:
