You can pursue an associate's or bachelor's degree in hospitality management and select a specialization that matches your career goals. Depending on the specialization you choose, you can learn how to manage a restaurant, hotel or casino; make travel reservations; or run a catering company. You can explore such topics as food and beverage cost control, food preparation, customer care, administrative purchasing, hospitality marketing and liability in the hospitality industry. Are There Any Prerequisites?

Students must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. Some schools offer bachelor's completion programs that require you to earn an associate's degree before applying. If you're applying to a bachelor's degree program, you may also need to submit college entrance examination scores as well as a short essay outlining your goals as a hospitality management student.

Is Distance Learning an Option?

Some programs are available in a hybrid format. The majority of your classes are taken online, but you'll still be required to complete an internship. Because teachers frequently use streaming audio and video applications as well as Web-based discussion forums, you'll need a computer with Internet capability. Most schools allow you to access lectures and assignments at your convenience. An online program might be attractive if you need scheduling flexibility or you're unable to relocate.

What Can I Do With This Degree?

An associate's or bachelor's degree may prepare you for a variety of positions in the hospitality industry, such as food and beverage director, hotel manager or catering manager. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for lodging managers is estimated to grow 8% from 2014-2024, and employment of food service managers is expected to grow 5% during the same period (www.bls.gov).
