Online Unix Classes and Training Programs
Learn about online certificate programs and Web courses in UNIX or Linux, a UNIX-like computer operating system. Find out the technology requirements for taking online UNIX classes.
What You Need to Know
If you're already working in the computer industry and want to take continuing education courses without leaving your current job, you can earn an online certificate in UNIX. As a working student, you can immediately apply your skills to your professional projects.
Do you want to become a trained system administrator or programmer? Perhaps you're already working in one of these roles but need to add knowledge of UNIX or Linux systems to your repertoire. There are also introductory classes available for students just beginning their studies of program and system administration.
|Courses||File editing and directories in a UNIX operating platform; object oriented programming with C++; shell scripting using Bourne, Korn and BASH; UNIX kernel architecture and tuning; data stacks; queues; linear structures and linked lists; and fundamentals of UNIX system maintenance and administration|
|Online||Online certificate programs for UNIX system administrators|
|Certificate||Blended on-campus and online UNIX/Linux system administration professional certificate programs|
Where Can I Find UNIX Courses Online?
There are many levels of UNIX courses online, from free MOOCs to UNIX classes within degreed programs, as well as certification programs. Courses in UNIX are often bundled with Linux and other software skills in certification programs. Below is a list of schools that offer online UNIX courses:
• University of California San Diego (San Diego, California) offers a UNIX and Linux system administration certificate program.
• University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Massachusetts): A certificate program in UNIX and Linux is offered here.
• Stanford University (Stanford, California) has a free UNIX course on the basics of UNIX through Open Classroom.
• San Jose City College (San Jose, California) offers online certificates and degrees with UNIX courses.
What Will I Learn?
If you're just getting started, you might be interested in an online introductory course to learn how to use the UNIX operating system. In a UNIX programming course, you'll be familiarized with the operating system, be introduced to different utilities in UNIX, and learn basic system commands and shell scripting. Some skills you might learn include:
• Installing and configuring UNIX and Linux operating systems
• Creating scripts using UNIX
• System administration strategies and concepts
• Security protocols
• Shell scripting
Your assignments might involve writing simple programs in AWK, Perl, Java or another programming language. Classes in the C++ programming language will enable you to write code for networking software.
Will I Need Special Software?
You'll probably need to download a free secure shell client program, or UNIX command interpreter. Shelling allows you to access shared on-campus UNIX servers and securely upload assignments. You'll be able to compile and execute source code for programming exercises on the servers. Some courses may require additional software applications, and your course may qualify you for free software for members of the Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance.
