What Are the Top Radiography Schools?

Read on to learn about some of the top schools offering programs in radiography. See what you can look for in a medical imaging program, what programs are offered by degree level, and professional certification and licensing requirements. Schools offering Cardiovascular Sonography degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Should I Look for in a Top Radiography School?

Many radiography programs are offered through community colleges at the associate's degree level. However, nationally ranked universities typically offer radiography programs at the bachelor's level or higher, as well as certificate options in areas of specialization or for those already holding a degree in the field. In choosing a school, take into account whether your training needs will be addressed, whether entry-level or advanced.

You should also consider whether a given program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT); completing a program accredited by the organization is required by some states for licensure. You might also consider whether the school aims to prepare you for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam since, in most states, passing the state certification exam or the one offered by the ARRT is a standard procedure for obtaining a license to practice.

What Are Three Top Radiography Schools?

Mayo School of Health Sciences in Rochester, MN

The Mayo School of Health Sciences is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic and ranked first in U.S. News & World Report's 2018-19 hospital honor roll, which recognizes medical centers that show a unique level of aptitude across multiple specialties. The Mayo School of Health Sciences offers an 18-month radiography program in conjunction with area universities. Your studies culminate in both a certificate awarded by Mayo and a bachelor's degree from an affiliated university. In the last two years of your program, you'll work full-time in the Mayo Clinic Department of Radiology while also attending courses.

  • Certificate of Completion in Radiography/Bachelor's Degree

University of Missouri in Columbia, MO

MU was ranked tied for 61st among public universities in 2019, according to U.S. News & World Report, and the Princeton Review named it one of the top Midwestern colleges in the same year. Its School of Health Professions houses the Cardiopulmonary and Diagnostic Sciences Department, which offers a JRCERT-accredited undergraduate degree program in radiologic sciences; it's the only bachelor's program in radiography offered by a public institution in the state.

If you're new to the field, you can complete an entry-level track that makes you eligible to take the ARRT exam or, if you're already a certified radiologic technologist, you can undertake a degree completion option either online or on campus. Already certified radiologic technologists could also opt to enroll in an online certificate program in a more specialized area. Programs offered by the school lead to the following awards:

  • Bachelor of Health Science in Radiologic Science
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Certificate
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Certificate

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC

UNC-Chapel Hill placed 30th among national universities in U.S. News & World Report's 2019 rankings, and the publication also ranked the school 8th among best value colleges. UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Medicine includes the Division of Radiologic Science. Through this division, you can undertake a post-associate's-degree certificate program, an undergraduate degree program, or a graduate degree program intended specifically for aspiring radiologist assistants, each of which may prime you for relevant ARRT exam eligibility. The university confers these awards:

  • Certificate in Radiography
  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging
  • Master's of Radiologic Science
