Business Secretary Job Description

Also known as administrative assistants, business secretaries can work in a variety of settings. Real estate offices, employment services, communication carriers, and manufacturers are just some of the industries employing these professionals. Regardless of which type of agency you end up working for, however, your main job duties will be to manage an organization's day-to-day correspondences and provide customer service to its clients.

Specific tasks could include answering and directing telephone calls, maintaining directories of contact info and taking the necessary steps to ensure the confidentiality of clients' information. You'll also be responsible for entering data into spreadsheets or using desktop publishing and word processing software to help create marketing materials, memos, and financial reports. You might also be asked to proofread these documents.

Additional job duties could include using computer software applications to schedule meetings or arrange travel plans. Some employers will also ask you to keep track of employees' payroll info and billed hours.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), from 2016-2026 secretaries and administrative assistants were forecasted to decline by 5%. Executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants were also expected to have a 17% decline. Legal secretaries were anticipated to have the highest decline by 19%, while medical secretaries were projected to have a 22% increase in employment opportunities.

As of May 2018, among the four specialties mentioned above, the highest paying were executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants, which earned a median salary of $59,340 per year. This is followed by legal secretaries, who earned $46,360 and $36,630 for secretaries and administrative assistants in that same year. Medical secretaries made an annual median wage of $35,760, per BLS.
