Materials Analyst Job Description

Inventory control and management will be your main focus as a materials analyst. You may also be responsible for tracking inventory trends, discovering ways to save money, and maintaining consistency in material quality. You may be required to handle inventory for production or inventory of products that are to be shipped to customers.

Job Duties

Material analysts design material and supply movement plans for companies, frequently using software systems. They may also have to predict and track customer product demand, manage transportation of exports and imports, and develop productivity improvement proposals. They often work for engineering firms, manufacturers and trucking establishments.

Qualifications

Most employers prefer applicants that have a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as business, industrial engineering, process engineering or supply chain management. 1-3 years of work experience in business or logistics is also strongly favored. Individuals can gain such and demonstrate knowledge while serving in the military or attaining certification through the American Society of Transportation and Logistics (ASTL) or the International Society of Logistics (SOLE). Aspiring materials analysts must have great communication, organization, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and familiarity with computer and materials management software, such as Oracle and i-Supply.
