Associate's Degrees

An associate's degree in child development prepares graduates for careers as childcare aides, assistant teachers, special education aides, and similar occupations. Graduates might also qualify for some positions in social work, or they might offer their professional services to community-based infant and children's welfare programs.

Bachelor's Degrees

Individuals who complete the requirements for an undergraduate degree in child development and education may qualify to pursue careers in areas such as teaching, special education, infant and toddler care, child nutrition, language and literacy, music education, or health and safety.

A bachelor's degree in education is typically the minimum requirement for those who want to become teachers in grades K-8. Most prospective teachers will have taken classes in child development and education in order to prepare for certification requirements.

Master's Degrees

Some industry careers may mandate completion of a master's degree program. For instance, some states may require all teachers to earn a master's degree after obtaining their teaching certification. In addition, upper-level children's health and welfare positions may require graduates to have completed coursework in child development and education.

Doctoral Degrees

A doctoral degree program in child development and education might prepare graduates to work in advanced research or academic positions. An advanced degree program may be appropriate for those who ultimately wish to design early childhood education courses or special needs educational curricula.
