There are plenty of online websites offering paralegal certificates and degrees, but prospective students need to be wary of these types of programs because many aren't accredited. This article discusses several online paralegal degree and certificate programs that are accredited by appropriate organizations. Schools offering Paralegal degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Online Paralegal Degree and Certificate Programs Overview

There are very few accredited online paralegal degree and certificate programs. Many organizations, like the American Bar Association (ABA), require in-house or campus-based programs due to the intensity of the paralegal curriculum. As a result, prospective students should exercise caution when choosing an online paralegal certificate or degree program. The chosen program should meet all professional requirements and necessary licensure for the prospective student's particular state if it's not accredited by the ABA.

George Washington University (GWU) offers an online master's degree in paralegal studies through its College of Professional Studies and GWU law school. The program is offered totally online and mirrors GWU's campus-based master's degree paralegal program. The 12-course program is designed for completion in two years, and students take courses in ethics, legal research, data and evidence collection, legal writing, government law, litigation and international law. Students also complete an independent research project and participate in a supervised internship. All enrolled paralegal students have complete access to GWU's online resources, including GWU's Law school library. GWU's program is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Some schools, like Edmonds Community College and Front Range Community College, offer online classes to students enrolled in their associate's degree programs. While these programs aren't fully online, aspiring paralegals might find these classes or similar programs worth considering. Edmonds' program was configured with the help of the Washington State Bar Association to meet standards of the American Bar Association.
