Nurse

All hospitals require the services of qualified and well-trained nurses. Nurses are responsible for promoting and protecting a patient's overall health during a hospital stay. They work closely with physicians in order to effectively administer prescribed care. Nurses spend the majority of their time working with patients and, therefore, must be able to interact easily with them. This includes putting patients at ease, if necessary.

Medical Assistant

Medical assistants carry out both administrative and medical tasks. They generally assist hospital nurses and physicians and might be responsible for checking in patients and maintaining patients' medical charts. Medical assistants also might take patients' vital signs, administer shots and assist with billing.

Hospitalist

Hospitalists are physicians who work exclusively in hospitals. Because traditional, primary care physicians visit hospitalized patients less frequently, hospitalists fill an important void. They typically work on a block schedule, which often requires them to work shifts of 10-12 hours.

Many current hospitalists have trained in internal medicine or family practice residency programs. Residency programs that are tailored to educating future hospitalists are beginning to emerge.
