Although many computer-related careers deal with high-tech technology, software developers earned the top spot on the U.S. News & World Report list of top technology jobs. As a software developer, you could be responsible for creating computer programs, including games, applications and systems software. They may also perform program updates or maintenance. You typically need at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, as well as programming experience, for software development positions.

Computer Systems Analyst

Computer systems analysts examine the business and technology needs of organizations in order to recommend improvements or new computer and operating systems. They may specialize in systems needed for a specific industry, such as healthcare management systems. Education requirements for becoming a computer systems analyst vary by employers, but in general, employers look for those who have a bachelor's degree in a computer or information science field. Some employers may not require any formal education, while others may require applicants to have a master's degree or some management information systems experience. Continuing education is common for this field because workers must keep current with changing technologies and software systems.

Web Developer

Web developers are responsible for creating the design and technical aspects of a website. They may write code, integrate graphics and videos, create layouts and monitor traffic on their site. Some web developers may specialize in just one of those areas, while others handle all aspects of the construction and operation of a website. Web developers typically need knowledge in both graphic design and programming, and many developers have at least an associate's degree in a field like web design. Knowledge of current tools and programming languages are also important, as is knowledge of the mobile technology and devices that are being used to view the websites.

Salary and Job Outlook

Due to the large demand for computer software programs, especially those related to mobile technology and gaming, employment of software developers is expected to increase by 22% from 2012-2022, according to the BLS. Employment should be best for those experienced in the most current programming tools and languages. The BLS also reported that software developers working with applications had a median annual income of $95,510 in May 2014, and those working in systems software earned a median of $102,880 at that same time.

According to the BLS, employment of computer systems analysts is also expected to grow faster than average from 2012-2022, with a predicted increase of 25%. Those working in the computer systems design and related services industry may see an increase of 35%. The BLS also reported that computer systems analysts earned an median salary of $82,710 as of May 2014.

Web developers had a median annual wage of $63,490, according to BLS data from May 2014. The top paying industry for this career was in computer systems design and related services, which had an annual average wage of $70,280 during that same period. Job openings for web developers are expected to grow faster than average, by 20%, between 2012 and 2022, the BLS reported. An increase the number of online shopping websites and the use of mobile devices to view websites will contribute to this increase.
