Emory University

Atlanta's Emory University offers a bachelor's degree program in German Studies. During the first two years of the program, students begin learning the language. Following language instruction, students partake in German culture, literature and conversation courses, like German civilization, Nazi medicine and business German. German majors are required to study abroad in Vienna, Austria; Freiburg, Germany; or Berlin, Germany for a portion of the program. It is also possible to earn a minor in the field, which also requires students to take German language courses.

Oregon State University

Students at Oregon State University can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree or a minor in German, and some courses are offered online. These may be available in standalone formats for non-degree-seeking or post-baccalaureate students. The German major requires students to complete several advanced language courses, as well as classes in German culture, literature and cinema, and students have many free electives. Furthermore, all majors must complete an internship or participate in a study abroad program. Candidates must demonstrate their language proficiency before graduation.

University of Wisconsin - Madison

The Department of German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as a minor and a certificate program. The bachelor's degree program requires students to take 8 or more classes in German language and literature, and coursework offerings include German linguistics, German film, German drama and Nazi culture.

The Master of Arts requires a total of 10 courses, and the PhD requires a total of 18 courses and a thesis. There are many literature and cultural classes spanning from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, as well as several linguistics courses that include medieval German. University of Wisconsin - Madison's study abroad programs visit Bonn and Freiburg. Also, graduates are required to be part of the German and Dutch Graduate Student Association (GDGSA).
