MCSD Certification Overview

The six available MCSD certification tracks can lead to work as a software developer, web developer, applications engineer and other related careers. These certifications are typically designed for experienced IT professionals.

You'll need to pass multiple exams for each certification track. For example, the Sharepoint applications track requires completion of four exams, while the application lifecycle management track requires passing three exams. In order to demonstrate your continued ability to function in your chosen area, you must pass a re-certification exam every two years.

Exam Requirements

All exams are taken through Pearson Vue, a testing company that has centers nationwide. You can schedule your test date via Microsoft's website. For some exams, such as Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3, Microsoft recommends you have experience in the subject matter.

Preparing for Exams

Microsoft offers self-paced virtual prep courses and in-person instructor-led prep courses. You can also purchase test-prep books through the Microsoft Press Store and practice tests through Kaplan. Some community colleges offer prep classes as well.

Other Certification Options

If the MCSD credential isn't right for you, there are alternatives. Entry-level computing professionals can obtain the Microsoft Technology Associate credential by passing a single exam. Available tracks include developer, database and IT infrastructure. The Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate certification has tracks in Windows Server 2012, Windows 8, SQL Server 2012 and related technologies. Most of these tracks require completion of at least two exams.
