What Comes First?

You must first finish high school and enter a nursing program. While in high school, you can take courses in science, math and health to prepare you for working with the human body. Seeking cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association can be beneficial.

Choosing a nursing program that meets your goals is important. You can seek out programs to become a nurse's aide, an LPN or an RN. Any program will teach you the basics of medical terminology, biology, patient care, anatomy and medical systems.

What Comes Next?

Depending on the program you've chosen, after completing work as a student nurse technician, your path will vary. If you have taken a 1-year nursing certificate program, you may be prepared to sit for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's (NCSBN) NCLEX-LPN exam, which can help in your state's licensing process as an LPN (www.ncsbn.org).

An associate's or bachelor's degree program prepares you for the NCLEX-RN exam, which can be used in the RN licensing process. After you've sought licensure, you can consider continuing your education in a specific nursing field, such as pediatrics, cardiology or radiology. These programs require higher education, a clinical experience and additional certification.

What Are Some Related Alternative Careers

Related careers outside of nurses include home health aides, personal care aides and medical assistants. Home health and personal care aides work with patients who have disabilities or chronic illnesses at their residence. They assist them with daily living needs, such as grooming. Medical assistants work in healthcare facility offices, overseeing administrative tasks, measuring vital signs and preparing blood samples. These professionals need a postsecondary certificate to enter the field, while care aides need no formal education.
