What Education Do I Need to Become a Video Game Technician?
A video game technician is a specialized electronics technician who typically works in arcades or game rooms, installing, repairing and troubleshooting video game machines. As such, an associate's degree or undergraduate certificate in electronics technology is typical preparation.
Electronics technology programs provide foundational instruction in computer-powered and computer-integrated electrical systems. They could train you in areas such as soldering technology, digital electronics, direct current circuits, alternating currents and solid state devices. You might also learn about electrical principles, low-voltage cabling, electrical test equipment, computer hardware and computer software. Additional areas of study might include microcontrollers, motors, alternating current (AC) circuits and direct current (DC) circuits. Because these programs often require extensive hands-on training, they're typically not offered online.
What Skills Do I Need?
Employers generally value applicants who have experience working with electronics, experience with video game electronics and a knowledge of electrical safety. Because video game electronics are typically set in cases made of wood or plastic, carpentry may also be a preferred skill.
