Types of Accreditation

There are two types of accreditation you can seek when choosing an MBA program. The first is accreditation that's specific to a school's MBA program, and the second is accreditation that covers an entire college or university.

Program-Specific Accrediting Agencies

The most well-known program-specific accrediting agency for MBA programs is AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This organization first adopted accreditation standards in 1919, and it's revised its standards continually since then, most recently in 2013. AACSB International evaluates MBA programs in four main areas: strategic management and innovation; students, faculty and professional staff; learning and teaching; and academic and professional engagement.

Other bodies that accredit MBA programs include the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

School-Specific Accrediting Agencies

MBA candidates also can look for schools that hold regional accreditation. Accrediting agencies that were recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as of 2013-2014 included the following:

  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission
