What Is an Online RN to MSN Program?

While there are a number of jobs available for registered nurses (RNs), supervisory jobs and other upper-level positions are only available to people with advanced degrees, such as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The following article describes online RN to MSN programs. Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Program Overview

An online RN to MSN program allows registered nurses to build on their current level of education and become advanced practice nurses. Online RN to MSN programs are often designed for RNs who have bachelor's degrees in fields other than nursing or who have diplomas or associate's degrees in nursing. Many online RN to MSN programs award a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree along with the MSN. Programs vary in length from 15 months to about two years.

Benefits of Online RN to MSN Programs

Since most RNs already have full-time nursing jobs, it may not be feasible for them to stop working to return to school. Online RN to MSN programs are designed to accommodate the schedules of working nurses. Students may never have to visit campus. Courses in nursing theory, concepts and issues are available online for the students to download at their convenience, within set deadlines. Most clinical practice requirements can be arranged for at facilities near the student's home or in the facilities that they currently work in.

Specialization Areas

MSN degrees require that students specialize in a particular branch of nursing. Some common specialization areas include adult care, pediatric care, women's health care and adult psychiatric care. Administration specialties may include nursing informatics and clinical nurse leader. Nurses who complete these programs generally apply for advanced nursing certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which requires passing an exam.

There are usually a number of job options in each specialization. For example, students who work toward becoming adult nurse practitioners can work in intensive care units, operating rooms or general medical care.
