Job Description

In this physician role, you'll specialize in offering pain relief and other drugs in a variety of medical situations, including surgery. One of your main duties is to monitor patients who you have administrated drugs to. Any changes in body temperature, blood pressure, breathing or heart rate must be properly handled to prevent complications. Other patients you might have to work with outside of surgery include people in intensive care, chronic pain sufferers or mothers giving birth.

Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2018 that the mean hourly wage for anesthesiologists was $128.38, while the mean yearly income was $267,020 (www.bls.gov). Those who were in the lowest ten percent of wages reported had yearly salaries of $133,080 or less.

Salary by Location

Texas, California and New York had high employment levels of anesthesiologists in May 2018, reported the BLS, and mean salaries in these locales were $260,690, $288,420 and $255,500, respectively. The top-paying states were Oregon, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Montana and Mississippi. States with low pay included Utah, Wyoming, Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia and Massachusetts, and the salary range was $68,070 to $250,180 in low-paying states.

Salary by Industry

If you want to get involved in the top-paying industries, then work for physician offices, outpatient care centers, dentist offices, specialty hospitals and home health care services. Specialty hospitals had the highest mean wage of $280,400 in May 2018, and physician offices came in second with a mean wage of $276,990. General medical and surgical hospitals had the second highest employment level and had a mean wage of $209,260, according to BLS figures.

Salary by Experience

According to PayScale.com, anesthesiologists with 1-4 years of work experience as of April 2019 made $257,025. Salaries increased to $295,302 for those with 5-9 years of experience and $304,291 for those with 10-19 years of experience.

Job Outlook

According to the BLS, industries with the highest levels of employment for anesthesiologists in May 2018 included physician offices, general hospitals, outpatient care centers, universities, and specialty hospitals. Additionally, the BLS reported that a 15% growth is expected in employment for anesthesiologists from 2016-2026. Overall, job opportunities are expected to be very good, especially in rural settings. As the healthcare industry continues to expand, along with population growth, the need for anesthesiologists is projected to continue to rise.
