June 2019 data from PayScale.com showed that the reported salaries for CNAs varied by number of years of experience. The hourly salary range for those possessing less than five years of experience was $11.53, while those with 5-10 years of experience reported hourly salaries of $12.18. Salaries were $12.77 with 10-20 years of experience and $13.52 with more than 20 years of experience.

Salaries by Location

Where you work can influence your salary as a CNA, since larger cities often offer higher average wages. PayScale.com reported that the median yearly salary for those in Chicago, Illinois, was $26,451 as of June 2019, while CNAs in Atlanta earned $26,509 at that time. Workers in Houston, Texas, made $31,666 a year, while those in Los Angeles, California, made $34,450.

The BLS reported in May 2018 that the states with the highest average pay for nursing assistants included Alaska ($39,830), New York ($37,010), Hawaii ($35,770), California ($35,220) and Nevada ($35,130).

Salaries by Industry

The industries that employed the most nursing assistants included nursing care facilities, hospitals and retirement and assisted living facilities, reported the BLS in May 2018. These industries had mean wages of $28,560, $31,540 and $27,780 respectively.

The top paying industries in May 2018 paid nursing assistants significantly higher wages. The Scientific Research and Development Services industry paid the highest average wage of $41,990 a year. The Federal Executive Branch paid $39,110 a year, and Junior Colleges offered an annual salary of $37,620.
