According to PayScale.com, the median September 2015 annual salary for an HR director in the United States was $81,599. The lowest tenth percentile earned $49,541 or less annually, while the top tenth percentile earned $125,111 or more annually.

Director level salaries for those with a Bachelor of Sciene in Human Resources Management ranged from $45,615-$115,444 annually. Salaries for those with a Master of Business Administration degree ranged from $59,760-$121,860.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov, reports that top paying fields for HR managers as a whole in May 2014 included other information services, securities and commodity contracts intermediation and brokerage and the motion picture and video industry. Mean annual salaries for managers in these industries were $166,250, $163,110 and $153,910, respectively.

Top employers of HR managers include company and enterprise management, local government and general hospitals. Mean wages in these industries in May 2014 were $128,730, $96,580 and $112,030, respectively.

Salaries by Location

The BLS reports that states with the highest mean pay in May 2014 included New Jersey ($144,280), the District of Columbia ($140,070), Delaware ($136,250), New York ($135,370) and Colorado ($133,740). The lowest mean annual earnings were $53,320-$90,350, and some states with this lower pay included Montana, West Virginia, Maine, Louisiana and Oklahoma.

Salaries by Experience

HR directors with 0-5 years of experience made $37,004-$86,661 in 2015, reported PayScale.com. Earnings rose to $47,854-$108,317 with 5-10 years of experience, $57,685-$128,933 with 10-20 years of experience and $63,549-$134,058 with 20 years or more of experience.
